If someone has been violent towards you this is a criminal offence. You are entitled to report any violence to the police and to press charges. Unfortunately the process of the Criminal Law is not particularly quick and it does not usually offer effective or immediate protection to the victim. The Civil Law is able to provide the protection. This does not mean that you cannot or should not press criminal charges as well.

We’ve listed some useful information in a Domestic Violence Factsheet, which includes the following:

  • What is an injunction and are there different types?
  • Who can apply for an Injunction?
  • How quickly can I obtain an injunction?
  • What happens if the order is broken?
  • What can you do to Help Yourself ?
  • What if I have received a warning letter or Court papers, can you help?
  • How long will an Order last?
